In short
- Register a private company, (Pty) Ltd, online on BizPortal, run by CIPC, the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission: R175 with a name, or R125 if the registration number becomes the name [1].
- No documents to upload: verify who you are, add the directors and pay. It’s usually done within a day [1], [2].
- SARS, the South African Revenue Service, gives the company an income tax number automatically [3]. It files a CIPC annual return every year [2].
How to register on BizPortal
Not every business needs to register with CIPC [4], so weigh up sole proprietor or company first.
Choose the company type
A private company is (Pty) Ltd [2].
Add a name, or skip it
Up to four names in order of preference; skip it, or if none is available, the registration number becomes the name [2].
Add the directors
Each with their own email address and cellphone number [2].
Pay the registration fee
R175 with a name, R125 without [1].
Receive the registration pack
Your certificate and company documents [2].
What it costs
CIPC registration for a private company with the standard Memorandum of Incorporation (MOI) is R125; a name adds R50 [4].
What you need
BizPortal needs no forms or documents [2].
How long it takes
What you get
